Editor’s note

The EliteBook 8 G1i sits below the EliteBook X in HP's business line, and it trades some polish for practicality. The configuration benchmarked here uses Intel's Core Ultra 5 225U — a 12-core chip with an 11 TOPS NPU — with 8GB of DDR5 and a 2TB SSD, though HP offers this model across a wide spread of Core Ultra U, H and V processors.

The practical advantage over its premium sibling is serviceability. Memory sits in two SO-DIMM slots and goes to 64GB, so this machine can be specified cheaply and upgraded later — something the soldered-memory Lunar Lake laptops cannot offer. It also keeps wired Ethernet, which matters in offices and labs, alongside two Thunderbolt-capable USB-C ports, two USB-A and HDMI. A 5MP webcam with IR Windows Hello and a fingerprint reader cover authentication, and Wi-Fi 7 with Bluetooth 5.4 is current.

The weak point is the display on the base configuration: a 14-inch 1920×1200 IPS panel covering only about 62.5% of sRGB. That is a washed-out screen by any standard, and if you do anything involving colour — even choosing images for a slide deck — it will bother you. Better panels are available as options and are worth the upcharge. Elsewhere it is 1.46kg and 15.5mm at its thickest, which is solid rather than light, and the 62Wh battery is adequate.

Buy it if you want upgradeable business hardware with Ethernet and Thunderbolt at a sensible price, and you specify a better display than the base one. Skip it if you need the lightest possible machine, want a great screen out of the box, or need discrete graphics — the EliteBook X or a mobile workstation answer those instead.

How the VS Score works — and what it can’t tell you

Every measurable spec is scored against the average of all the laptops we track: matching the class average scores 50, clearly beating it climbs towards 100, and each spec counts according to an editorial weight that reflects real-world impact — a battery-capacity gap moves the score far more than a colour-options list. The quality bars on the spec cards above show where this model sits inside the full range for its class, and the overall VS Score rolls every weighted result into one number.

Unknown values are never estimated. A spec this product doesn’t report simply drops out of its scoring — it isn’t penalised with a guess — but a thinner spec sheet does mean a score built on fewer data points, which is why completeness is disclosed under About this data.

Most importantly: a spec-sheet lead is not the same as a better product. Megapixels, gigahertz and benchmark points describe capacity, not experience — image processing, software optimisation, thermals, haptics and ergonomics decide how a device actually feels, and no table captures reliability or long-term support quality. Treat the VS Score as a structured summary of what can be measured, not a substitute for your own priorities.

About this data

  • Specifications are compiled from each manufacturer’s official spec sheet, cross-checked against trusted specification databases, and normalised into one schema so identical things are compared identically.
  • Specifications last verified July 27, 2026.
  • Data completeness: 50 of the 53 specs in this category are verified (94%). Anything we could not verify is shown as Unknown — never estimated — and is excluded from the score.
  • Prices and availability come from live retailer feeds via our shopping partners and refresh throughout the day; a missing price means no partner currently lists the product, not that it is discontinued.
  • Want the full picture? Our editorial guidelines explain how we research products, weight the scores and stay independent.
