Editor’s note

The ProBook 4 G1i is a fleet laptop, and it should be judged as one. HP built it for IT departments buying in volume: manageable, repairable, sensibly specified, and priced well below the EliteBook line. If you are choosing a machine for yourself the calculus is different, and one specification deserves attention before any other.

That specification is the display. A 14-inch 1920 x 1200 IPS panel sounds fine until you see the colour coverage, which sits around 62% of sRGB. In practice that means muted, slightly washed-out colour — perfectly usable for spreadsheets, email and video calls, and genuinely poor for anything where colour matters. Photographers and designers should stop reading here.

Elsewhere it is a reasonable 2026 business machine. The Core Ultra 5 225U is a 12-core chip that handles office multitasking without complaint, Wi-Fi 7 is present, and the 5MP webcam with IR is better than what most laptops twice this price were shipping two years ago. The 56Wh battery charging at 100W is adequate rather than generous.

The other thing to check is connectivity. There is no Thunderbolt or USB4 here, only two USB-C ports and one USB-A, which limits high-speed docks and external GPU enclosures. Memory is DDR5 and tops out at 32GB.

Buy it if you need a dependable, serviceable laptop for document work, browsing and meetings, and you want to spend as little as possible to get Wi-Fi 7 and a current-generation CPU. Skip it if colour accuracy matters at all, if you rely on a Thunderbolt dock, or if this will be your only machine for years — the panel is the part you will notice every single day.
