Editor’s note
The Latitude 5440 is the generation before the 5450, which today makes it a value proposition rather than a current purchase. It uses Intel's Core i3-1315U, a 6-core Raptor Lake U chip, and this configuration adds something unusual for a business 14-incher: a discrete GeForce MX550 with 2GB of its own memory alongside 8GB of upgradeable DDR5.
That MX550 is worth understanding before you get excited. It is an entry-level discrete GPU — enough to accelerate video export, CAD viewports and photo editing, and enough for older or undemanding games at 1080p, but nowhere near a modern gaming GPU. Its real value in a business context is offloading display and media work from a modest CPU.
The rest is standard, competent Latitude: a 14-inch 1920×1080 anti-glare IPS panel at 60Hz with 99% sRGB, two Thunderbolt-capable USB-C ports, two USB-A, HDMI, wired Ethernet, a fingerprint reader and an IR camera, all in a 1.39kg body with an aluminium lid over a plastic base. RAM goes up to 64GB. The 54Wh battery is adequate rather than generous.
The drawbacks are about age. The Core i3-1315U has no NPU at all, so none of the Copilot+ local AI features apply, and its raw performance is modest — this is a machine for email, documents and browsers, not compilation or heavy multitasking. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 are fine but a generation behind. New stock is thinning out, and much of what is available is refurbished.
Buy it if you want inexpensive, repairable business hardware for light office work, ideally with the MX550 config if any media work is involved. Skip it if you need current performance, AI features, or a warranty on new stock — the 5450 is the direct answer.
