Editor’s note
The 13-inch Surface Laptop is the budget entry in Microsoft's Arm line, and it reaches its price by removing things rather than by using worse materials. The aluminium chassis is still 1.22kg and 15.6mm thick, and it still has a 3:2 touchscreen — but at 13 inches, 1920×1280 and a fixed 60Hz.
Inside is Qualcomm's 8-core Snapdragon X Plus (X1P-42-100), which is the entry-level Copilot+ chip. Its 45 TOPS NPU clears the Copilot+ bar comfortably, so local AI features work, and general performance is fine for browsing, office work and video calls. The 50Wh battery combined with Arm efficiency is the real draw: this is a machine that reliably lasts a working day. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 are current, and the fingerprint reader is present.
The cuts are visible once you look at the details. There is no Thunderbolt or USB4 on the two USB-C ports, so high-speed docks and external GPUs are out. There is no IR camera, so Windows Hello relies on the fingerprint reader rather than face unlock. No HDMI and no SD card reader. The 60Hz panel feels ordinary next to the 120Hz screens on the larger Surface models, and the 16GB of LPDDR5X is soldered. The same Windows-on-Arm software caveats apply as on every Snapdragon laptop.
Buy it if you want the smallest, lightest Surface with genuinely all-day battery for writing, email and browsing, and you value portability over speed. Skip it if you need Thunderbolt, face unlock, a high-refresh screen or any performance headroom — the 13.8-inch model or an Intel ultrabook covers those, and heavy or specialist software argues against Arm entirely.
