Editor’s note

The Legion 5a Gen 11 is Lenovo's attempt to put an OLED gaming panel into the mainstream Legion price bracket, and the screen is what you are really buying. A 15.3-inch 2560 x 1600 OLED at 165Hz with full sRGB coverage is a substantial upgrade over the IPS panels that usually appear at this level, and it makes single-player games and video look considerably better.

The rest is a competent mid-range gaming machine. The RTX 5050 with 8GB is an entry-tier current-generation GPU, well matched to 1080p and capable at the panel's native resolution with upscaling enabled. The Ryzen 7 250 handles game logic comfortably, and the 245W adapter means the GPU gets the power it needs. At 1.87kg and just under 19mm it is reasonably portable for the class.

Be careful with the memory configuration. 8GB of DDR5 alongside a discrete GPU is a genuine bottleneck in modern games and will cause stutter that people often misdiagnose as a GPU problem. It is socketed and expandable to 64GB, so this is cheap to fix, but do it at purchase rather than wondering why performance disappoints.

The omissions are the usual ones at this price. There is no Thunderbolt or USB4, and an 80Wh battery driving a 165Hz OLED will not give you a long unplugged session.

Buy it if you want the best-looking screen you can get on a mid-range gaming laptop and you will upgrade the RAM. Skip it if you play competitive shooters at high frame rates, where an RTX 5050 will hold you back, or if you need a laptop that also works well all day away from a socket.
